Crossing the Waters: Ferries in Condado de Harris
Ferries were long an essential component of transportation in Condado de Harris. Not only did they convey persons, freight, and animals across the numerous waterways in the southern part of the county, but Nathaniel Lynch’s ferry crossing the San Jacinto River determined the site of the final, victorious battle of the Texas Revolution in April 1836. Eventually, bridges and tunnels replaced all the county ferries except for the Ferry Lynchburg that remains in operation today.
