Matzke Park, a 20-acre facility, began as a joint development project between Harris County Precinct 4 and the Association for Better Community Schools (ABCS). Precinct 4 has completed the first phase development that includes a multiuse trail with water fountains, one parking lot, a rest room facility, four soccer fields and one cricket field, tree plantings, and fencing along Grant Road.
In 2007, the Norchester Garden Club partnered with ABCS, The Home Depot, and Westco Grounds Maintenance Co., Inc. to develop a butterfly and sensory garden. Future improvements by ABCS and Norchester Garden Club include a 40-seat pavilion with picnic tables, benches, a birdbath, and an all-inclusive, barrier-free playground (estimated at over $220,000) that will allow children of all physical abilities to play together.
At a June 2007 appreciation gathering hosted by Commissioner Eversole, ABCS president Tracy Torma unveiled the final schematic for the playground and announced the association’s fund-raising initiative. At this event, Marti Boone, executive director of Be An Angel Fund., Inc. presented Ms. Torma with a check for $22,100, which is the matching amount of donated funds ABCS had received at that time. Ms. Boone also announced that Be An Angel Fund, Inc. would assist ABCS with their fund-raising efforts.
